"Feeding the fish harms the delicate ecosystem of the coral reef…"
This and many more quotes appear on the dozens signs that are now hanging in dive clubs around Eilat. Zalul, along with a group of volunteers, created the signs in order to make divers more aware of the impact they have on the sea life in the coral reef.
One of the reasons for the deterioration of the coral reef in Eilat is the lack of education and awareness divers have about the damage they can cause. It is not uncommon for divers to be tempted to touch the different coral, kick sand onto the reef, or even try to feed the fish. Every act of this sort causes substantial damage and contributes to the destruction of the coral reef.
Recently, a group of volunteers decided to take action and turned to Zalul for assistance. Together, beautiful signs were produced which guide the divers how to act appropriately. The signs now hang in all the dive centers in Eilat.
Liora Levy, who initiated the project, explains, "In light of the terrible condition of the coral reef in Eilat, we decided to act. As part of my university studies, I prepared a research project on the condition of the coral reef, and it occurred to me that the behavior of the divers greatly impacts the reef. After many conversations with divers, I understood that many of them lack basic knowledge of the underwater ecosystem. Therefore, I decided to be proactive and along with Danny Sakowirsky, an underwater photographer, Carmit Isaac, a graphic designer, and Zalul, we created the signs for the divers."
Zalul greatly appreciated such leadership and involvement from the general public. Educating and raising awareness amongst divers can have a tremendous effect on reviving the dying reef in Eilat.
This is a small step for man, and a giant step towards saving the coral reef.
