After a year-long campaign in Herzliya – Zalul declares victory! The Herzliya municipality published a tender in the newspapers for upgrading the sewage treatment facility.
Against its previous claims, and after an aggressive battle, the Herzliya municipality accepted Zalul’s position. Partially treated sewage can no longer flow into the sea and the old sewage treatment facility must be upgraded as soon as possible.
For the past year, Zalul has been conducting a major campaign, along with the residents, for a clean sea in Herzliya. Zalul claims that the Herzliya municipality did not do anything for several years in order to stop the sea pollution in its area.
Herzliya’s sewage treatment facility was built tens of years ago and for the last several years it has not been able to handle the capacity of sewage the large developing population. Zalul gave the mayor two options to resolve the problem: connect to the Dan Region sewage treatment facility, or upgrade the city’s old sewage treatment facility and use the treated water for agriculture. Until recently the Herzliya municipality fought with Zalul and refused o accept either one of the options.
On the 27th of June, the Permit Committee of Spillage to the Sea accepted Zalul’s position and did not renew the permit for Herzliya to spill its partially treated sewage to the sea. On the 8th of August, the committee met again in order to discuss Herzliya’s permit as a result of the legal appeal that they made. Against, all claims that Herzliya made in the past, Herzliya’s representatives displayed in the meeting newspaper ads from the previous day advertising the tender to upgrade the city’s sewage treatment facility. As a result the committee agreed to renew their permit for three months only, until the month of December.
According to Sagit Rogenstein who led the campaign for the last year: “Today it is clear that Zalul’s campaign with the resident’s of Herzliya to remove the sewage from the sea was more capable of brining about change in the past year than the mayor of Herzliya was able to do in 6 years. It is sad that the mayor fought Zalul for so long, even to the level of making dirty irrelevant accusations, and did not take responsibility for resolving the problem until the law forced her to do so.
We are now convinced that we, as citizens, should not be forgiving to politicians’ irresponsibility, and we must fight them as a group to reach the desired results.”
