The Israeli Government decided to remove the fish cages from the Gulf of Eilat, however there is still a long way to go before the reef will be saved.

Several weeks ago the government came to a decision to accept Zalul's and the other environmental organizations' position to remove the fish cages from the Gulf of Eilat in three stages over the course of three years.

The removal of the fish cages is an important step in the rehabilitation of the coral reef, however the delicate ecosystem in the Gulf of Eilat is still under threat.

This month, Zalul is examining all the potential dangers that still threaten the reef. The list is long. The Eilat port, KAZA (the pipeline transporting crude oil), the sewage that can flow from private yachts, illegal and legal fishing practices around the coral reef, and the damage of tourism are just some of the possible threats to the coral reef today.

Zalul is committed to continuing the fight to preserve the coral reef in the Gulf of Eilat, and will not cease until all the dangers to the reef are removed.
