Pressure Avails: Sewage treatment plant in Beit She'an opens

The Herod River, which witnessed the establishment of the state with an abundant water stream in the heart of the Herod Valley all the way south to Jordan, has had many difficult years of suffering from pollution as a result of its water being used for agricultural output. The river's natural water flow has been replaced by sewage from cities and wastewater from fish ponds. The wastewater flows through Gilboa Regional Council area communities, Beit She'an Valley Regional Council, and the city of Beit She'an until the river turns into a canal with a horrible stench.

One year ago communities completed construction of sewage treatment plants at a cost of NIS 40 million, but due to various disagreements the treatment plant has not been activated and the sewage continued to flow and contaminate the Jordan River, a landmark that is holy to all religions.

A few months ago Zalul decided to put an end to the ongoing absurdity and demanded the immediate operation of the sewage treatment plant. Zalul engaged in activites such as writing letters to the heads of government offices demanding the authorities to stop the pollution, signing petitions, and campaigning to stop the flow of sewage and restore the water stream. Following these actions, the Valley Regional Council announced that they would undertake the initiative and begin to activate the treaetment plant.

Beit She'an Municipality also announced that it intends to connect to the treatment plant, but writing these things doesn't solve anything. Unfortunately, Gilboa Regional Council will continue to discharge effluent into the river since they have not completed the construction of a sewer system. Zalul will continue to monitor events in the river to remove all pollutants and will act to restore this important river.
