Who is polluting the sea? It is no secret now!
Zalul is thrilled to announce that the Ministry of the Environment has decided to adopt and enact the "The Polluter Must Advertise," a procedure that will require all companies with permits to discharge waste to the sea to publicly disclose their discharge information. The purpose of the procedure is to create a reporting mechanism that will reveal to the Israeli public the actual materials that are polluting the sea, including the types of waste, the quantity, and where it is discharged from.
The procedure was proposed by Member of Knesset Moshe Gafni, but after consulting with Gideon Ezra, the former Minister of the Environment, he decided to promote the procedure within the Interministerial Permit Committee. In July 2009 the procedure for permits to dischrage was accepted by the Commission along with the support of Gilad Arden, the present Minister of the Environment.
The new requirements will promote public involvement by increasing civilian access to information, which will lead to increased environmental awareness specifically to sea pollution. This will serve as an effective tool to accelerate investments in advanced technological solutions for wastewater and pollutants.
In the coming days there will be a meeting between representatives of the Ministry of the Environment and Zalul to formulate the details of the advertisements and what will be published in the press. "The Polluter Must Advertise" is another important step in Zalul's struggle to protect and maintain Israel's sea, rivers, and streams.
