Ashdod residents express their support for the Lachish River during Zalul's polling activities.

The response is overwhelming!  Ashdod residents express their support for the Lachish River during Zalul's polling activities.

In the polling done by Zalul Environmental Association during the past month in Ashdod shopping malls, 100% of voters called for the rescue of the Lachish River!

In the last month, Zalul has held activities around the Ashdod area to promote the protection of the Lachish River. During these activities, mock elections were held across the city. The results are a testament to the position of Ashdod residents and their support for the protection of the Lachish River from the heavy pollution that has been dumped into it in recent years.

The results of the election were unequivocally clear:  Thousands of residents voted for saving the Lachish, zero voted against it.

Part of Zalul's campaign to rescue the Lachish River, which began in February, is to hold awareness raising activities throughout Ashdod. During the activities, Zalul activists toured the city Sunday through Thursday, and held educational events and distributed information to residents. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, "field elections" were held to allow residents to express their position on protecting the Lachish River.

Zalul activists said that the amazing responsiveness of Ashdod residents warmed their hearts. In addition, it is clear that the results of the election are a testimony to the determination of area residents to rescue the Lachish River.

Said Shahar Brinenberg, Lachish River Campaign Coordinator, "The mayor of Ashdod, who also serves as chairman of the river rehabilitation committee, has a double obligation to the Lachish River.  However, he does nothing to enforcement the law and lets the companies in the industrial zone pollute the river. Zalul expects Mayor Zilker to act as he promised during his interview on 'Radio South', and to order the closing of factories that pollute. Zalul hopes that they Mayor is not bluffing, as past experiences prove that even public promises are not always kept."
