Internal Committee for the Environment determined on July 2:

Urgent measures must be taken against the pollution of the Gulf of Acco.

As a result of major pollution in the Gulf of Acco, in which the coastal beaches of the city have been closed, and due to a convention in the city led by Zalul that took place the weekend before, the Internal Committee for the Environment in the Knesset, led by Knesset Member David Azulai, convened on July 2 to discuss the pollution problem.

The committee's main conclusions were announced by Knesset Member David Azulai, and strengthened Zalul's assertion that the treatment of the pollution in the Gulf of Acco is done irresponsibly. The Minister of the Environment was given one week to urgently adopt proceedings against the pollutants. The committee likewise ordered the chairman of the committee to the regional doctor of the north and to the regional inspector to convene at the upcoming meeting on July 4 with the committee of the Health Ministry for the North in order to find a short-range solution for the pollution of the Gulf.

The chairman of the committee was presented with the list of the main pollutants of the Gulf of Acco. The main emphasis of the committee was on the Carmiel Municipality, which was ordered to attend the meeting by the committee and nowadays constitutes the main polluter of the gulf. According to the representative of the Ministry of the Environment that attended the committee meeting, the Municipality of Carmiel twice submitted a request for authorization of dishcharging the sewage to the Hilazon-Naaman River and despite being twice refused, the municipality continues to discharge the sewage of the city to the river and from there to the Gulf of Acco. At the same time, the municipality offers superficial solutions and specifically focuses on the reduction of pollution and is not focused on solutions for total cessation.

Delegates of Zalul that participated in the discussion, observed that one source of difficulty in the termination of pollution to the gulf of Acco is the indifference of government offices against the polluters of the gulf and the lack of action towards putting massive pressure on the main polluters to find operational solutions to stop this awful oversight.

Said Ezer Fishler, manager of Zalul's campaign: "Inhabitants of Acco are held as hostages during the summer without any possibility of bathing in the sea. All this in order not to hurt the position of chairman of the local authority and head a municipality of Carmiel, Adi Alder. His city is discharging without a permit, and in contrast to the judgment, to the river and that constitutes a criminal offence. Zalul will continue to struggle with the inhabitants of Acco until the last moment that sewage is discharge into the gulf and the beach will be reopened to for the enjoyment the residents, when it is clean completely."
