On February 22, 2007 Zalul held a demonstration in front of the Acco municipality where the Minister of the Environment met with the mayor in order to discuss the city's environmental issues.
While the demonstration was planned by Zalul, many other groups participated including fishermen from the Acco area, students from "Green Course", workers of the Acco municipality and residents of Acco. The demonstration was in protest of the ALA Pipeline and the pollution of the Gulf of Acco.
The ALA Pipeline in the Gulf of Acco was constructed over 5 years ago and was not in use from the day of its construction. The use of the pipeline began in February 2006 as a result of the decision of the Permit Committee for Spillage to the Sea which gave the polluting factory Miluban a permit to pump their sewage into the sea through the pipeline. Following Miluban, other polluting factories in the area including “Zoglobak”, “Miluof”, Delta” and Of Hagalil” began spilling their sewage through the pipeline as well. Each factory that holds a permit is now allowed to spill their sewage into the sea through the pipeline. This means that there could be an astronomical amount of wastewater flowing directly into the Gulf of Acco.
Last month the regional court in Haifa rejected the request of ALA to demand a business license.
According to the situation that has developed, the ALA Pipeline is actually working without a business license and in essence against the law. When Zalul tried to write to the Ministry of Environment about this issue, the answer received was one that stirs away from giving a clear answer and does not reveal any details about the operation. These were some of the issues that were discussed in the meeting between the mayor - who is against the operation of ALA Pipeline, and the Minister of Environment.
