Zalul Association in a letter to the Environmental Minister:
The Ministry of Environment must work to stop the illegal operation of the Ala Pipeline near Acco.
After turning to many different responsible bodies at the Ministry of Environment in order to put an end to the illegal operation of the Ala Pipeline, the efforts were in vain. Now Zalul turned to the Minister of Environment in a request that he take the matter into his own hands.
In an urgent letter to the Minister of Environment, Ezer Fischler, Zalul's coordinator in the north, expressed the organization's deep concern for the illegal operation of the Ala Pipeline, as it is currently operating without a permit. Fischler calls for the Minister to forbid the operation of the pipeline which is inadequate to begin with.
The Ala Pipeline was constructed 5 years ago and since its completion it had not been in operation. The pipeline began operating as a result of the decision of the Permit Committee to allow "Miluban" factory to spill it's sewage into the sea through the pipeline. The pipeline leads the sewage directly into the Gulf of Acco and the pollution flows directly to the beaches of the city. As a result of the recent operation of the pipeline, other factories such as "Delta", "Miluof" and "Of Hagalil" began spilling their sewage through the pipeline. Currently, all the factories that have a permit are allowed to use the pipeline and to pollute the beaches of Acco.
In the letter to the Minister, Fischler explains that the Ala Pipeline does not have a proper business license and is thus operation illegally. Furthermore, the pipeline does not have the necessary equipment for such an operation. This is another example that points to the incompetence of the Permit Committee who ordered the Miluban to spill their sewage into the sea through the pipeline. The Permit Committee recently received some severe criticism from the regional court in Haifa regarding their decisions and actions.
Spilling the sewage into the sea through the pipeline will not allow the Ministry of Environment to monitor the levels of pollution appropriately. If the factories will deviate from the standards that were set for them, no one will know until the pollution will hit the beaches. Zalul believes that pollution should no be moved further way as any sort of solution. The factories must treat all the sewage on land and not spill it into the sea.
